Nicolas de Fer's map illustrates the lands explored by LaSalle, and includes a sketch of his murder. LaSalle believed the Mississippi to flow close to Spanish mines in Mexico. In 1685, he sailed from France with the intention of entering the river from the Gulf of Mexico to confirm French possession. His maps were inaccurate, however, and he sailed past the mouth of the Mississippi. LaSalle landed near Metagorda Bay in Texas. After spending 2 years in search of the river, he began a trek north. His men objected to the expedition, however, and killed him.

This handsome map has attractive outline color and contains a highly unusual shape for the Florida Peninsula. Indian villages are identified. A portion of Cuba, the Bahamas and the Canal de Bahama (the Gulf Stream), are also shown.
