Maps of the best known islands are protected by fabulous green dragons and a dangerous sea dog. A flying fish sails off the bow of a galleon. Elaborate strapwork cartouches frame the name of each of the six islands.

An inset of Havana proclaims it to be "the most celebrated port of all the West Indies". At the lower left, reference is made to the salt marshes at Margareta. At upper left, two of the earliest Spanish settlements are identified in Jamaica.

Gerhard Mercator was the cartographer of this exquisite map published in Amsterdam by Jodocus Hondius.
