One of the best known and most
attractive foundation maps of the era. It contains all the elements of fine mapmaking and
it influenced mapmakers for more than a century. This highly decorative map shows the gold
and silver deposits of the Appalachians, a waterfall flowing into a lake at the foot of
the mountains, and contains drawings of Indian villages in Virginia and Florida.
St. Augustine is shown at the bottom of the map, near a sea monster. Other details include
deer and turkey, Indians smoking their catch of just netted fish, and ships sailing off
the Outer Banks. Gerhard Mercator was the cartographer. Published in Amsterdam by Jodocus
Hondius.
