#7 Florida et Apalche Wytfliet, 1597 $35 $215 framed

Cornelis Van Wytfliet published this separate map in the first atlas of America. The sketch of the peninsula follows the Ortelius/Chaves model of 1584 but has a more rectangular shape. The unique color scheme lends an exotic quality to this highly regarded and quite beautiful example.

Apalche designates the mountanous Appalachan region while Florida is the name for the entire region. The interior detail is derived from the earlier DeSoto and LeMoyne renderings (See #s 2 & 5). The Bahamas and Cuba are also shown.
