This spectacular view of Florida and the Caribbean appeared in engraver Theodore De Bry's "Grand Voyages". The map accompanied an account by Girolamo Benzoni, of Milan, of his travels in these waters between 1541-56.

It is one of the very few maps of the era to concentrate on the West Indies, Florida, Venezuela, Colombia and Central America when Old World ownership of the region was rapidly changing.

Oversized islands, beautifully rendered sailing ships and sea monsters dot the Caribbean Sea. Many islands are named and interior settlements identified. The depiction of "Floridae" follows the LeMoyne drawing of 1564, also engraved by DeBry. This rare map is owned by the St. Augustine Historical Society.
