map detail

Abraham Ortelius published these two important maps on a single sheet in Antwerp. The map in the upper section is one of the earliest to detail the region of western Mexico around Culiacan. Palm trees , rivers, and mountains embellish the landscape. The map contains an unusual error: The Tropic of Capricorn is shown where the Tropic of Cancer should appear.

The lower section contains one of the loveliest maps of the Greater Antilles. This is the first detailed view of the islands from Yucatan east to Dominica. Terrae Floridae, the Keys ("Scopuli"), and the Bahama chain are shown to the north. Settlements on Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and S.Lois (Porto Rico) are noted. Exotic birds perch on the title cartouche as ships under sail patrol the seas.
